MINUSES SUMMARY
The author of Borax II is back, with a wonderful new map. Heavy Industry places you on a mission to clear the Strogg out of a mine, and protect (lose!?!) a data CD. Once more Dennis has applied his unique vision to a map, making this a gameplay experience like no other. The first thing I noticed was just how well Dennis has created a believable yet alien industrial complex. There is attention to detail and plenty of little extra touches to eliminate any possibility of visual boredom. From nice computer units mounted on the walls to large beams and mysterious structures populating nearly every area of the map. By implementing plenty of variety, and giving each section of the map it's own unique look, it's easy to find your way around, despite the enormous size of the level. I was simply amazed at just how cool looking this map is. There is plenty of fun to be had within the confines of all this cool architecture as well. Strogg placement isn't anything special: there are no really startling encounters, however the right types and quantities of Strogg are used to make fights furious without being overwhelming. The only real downside to the map would be the vague sense of progression in gameplay. The computer updates are not really taken advantage of, and it leads to a kind of running blind experience. It's even a bit hard to call that a complaint, because many people may enjoy the mysterious feel of not really knowing what to do next, or where to go. In short, it could have used a bit more structure. Also, the map is large and pushed my P200, Voodoo2, 64 meg to the limits, so it'll probably run a tad slow in a few places on low end machines. Finally, I noticed a beam that was floating a few inches off the ground. Bottom line: this is fun, and really cool to look at, grab it now!
